The San Antonio Public Library (SAPL) recently received a surprise delivery-an overdue book that had been missing for more than eight decades. The title, Your Child, His Family, and Friends by Frances Bruce Strain, was originally borrowed in July 1943 and was due back within 28 days. Instead, it resurfaced in June 2025, making it one of the most overdue returns in the library’s history.
How the book reappeared after generations?
The person who returned the book identified themselves only as “PAAG” from Oregon. In a heartfelt letter enclosed with the book, they explained how the long delay happened. After the death of their father, the book was discovered among his belongings. PAAG noted that their grandmother likely checked it out when their father was just 11 years old. Soon after, she moved to Mexico City for work at the U.S. Embassy-and apparently carried the library book with her.
Decades later, the forgotten volume made its way back into the family’s possession. “When I noticed it was from the San Antonio Public Library, I decided to send it back to you,” PAAG wrote. With humor, they added: “I hope there is no late fee for it because Grandma won’t be able to pay for it anymore.”
The cost of an 82-year delay
Although SAPL officially removed late fees for overdue items in 2021, staff calculated that the fine would have totaled nearly ₹78,600 ($896.79) if it were applied. The library also confirmed that the book arrived in good condition despite its long absence.

Instead of reshelving the book, SAPL announced it will be showcased this month in the Central Library’s lobby. Following the display, it will be donated to the Friends of SAPL and sold at the Book Cellar, with proceeds going toward library programs.
Interestingly, Your Child, His Family, and Friends is a vintage parenting guide published in the 1940s, offering a glimpse into family life and child-rearing advice of that era.
