Mohammed Siraj had the last laugh as India snatched a dramatic six-run victory over England to draw the series 2-2. Injured England star Chris Woakes, who dislocated his shoulder on day one, had to bat in a SLING at the Oval as the hosts chased victory.
India headed to the capital ahead of the deciding fifth Test following a battling draw at Old Trafford to keep the series alive. The tourists faced a Ben Stokes-less England side who'd made sweeping changes to their bowling attack ahead of the deciding fifth Test.
After rain curtailed day four on Sunday following Joe Root and Harry Brook's magnificent centuries, England required just 35 runs to complete an impressive run chase of 374. But Brendon McCullum's side only had four wickets in hand, one of whom was Woakes, who was bravely prepared to bat in spite of his injury.
Jamie Overton started with intent by hitting back-to-back fours but it suddenly got trickier when Jamie Smith knicked off from the rampant Siraj, who'd dropped Brook on 19 before his century. In came Gus Atkinson, who was centimetres away from being caught for a duck by KL Rahul, ending an extraordinary over from Siraj.
The ball was doing plenty as Prasidh Krishna continued the attack, with tension rising. But it was Siraj who took the next wicket - one of his five in the fourth innings - getting Overton LBW.

The new ball was available but India opted not to take it, as Josh Tongue gingerly walked to the crease. Woakes was walking around the pavilion with his right arm in a sling.
Tongue was then given out LBW by umpire Ahsan Raza and Woakes looked set to wander down. But a successful review kept England with two wickets in hand and Tongue on strike.
He didn't last much longer, though, as Krishna took his wicket and in came Woakes, who's been told to expect four to six months of recovery which could dent his Ashes hopes. With one arm tucked up his jumper in a sling, the 36-year-old courageously joined Atkinson as England chased the final 17 runs - last chance saloon.

Then Atkinson took a huge six runs, as Akash Deep's dive knocked the ball over the boundary. The Surrey seamer, at his home ground, was protecting the grimacing Woakes from the strike, but he managed a quick single on the final ball of the over to avoid going on strike. It was 10 to win.
Atkinson then smashed a ball towards the boundary, with Woakes pushing through the pain barrier to run two. The target was into single figures, as new India captain Shubman Gill constantly rearranged his field on the 25th day of an enthralling series.
Another single from the gutsy Atkinson to end the over once again protected Woakes, but their heroism was ultimately in vain. Siraj clattered the ball into his off stump to seal India's most narrow Test match win and end an incredible series in a fitting manner.
