Liverpool parade crash: Car drives into fans at title celebrations as police attend scene

A car has driven into fans celebrating the Reds' title triumph at a parade through the city centre. An estimated 800,000 supporters packed the streets to salute their heroes on an open-top bus.

But celebration turned to horror when a car ploughed into fans on Water Street. A man was detained following the incident and later arrested.

Footage, seen by The Mirror, shows a vehicle mowing down numerous pedestrians. Others then opened the doors to the car after it had come to a stop.

As well as the police, several ambulances attended the scene as well as the air ambulance. It is as yet unclear as to how many people have been injured, but the report at least three were taken away on stretchers.

have confirmed that people have been hit by a car. A police spokesperson said: "We are currently dealing with reports of a road traffic collision in city centre.

"We were contacted at just after 6pm today, Monday 26 May, following reports a car had been in collision with a number of pedestrians on Water Street.

"The car stopped at the scene and a male has been detained. Emergency services are currently on the scene. We will issue more updates as we have them."

They later added: “We would ask people not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding tonight’s incident on Water Street in Liverpool city centre.

“We can confirm the man arrested is a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area.

“Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision.

“We would ask people not to share distressing content online but to send the footage or information directly to us @MerPolCC or pass on information by calling 101 quoting log 784.

“Information can also be passed on anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

The North West Ambulance Service added: "NWAS is supporting an incident in Liverpool city centre, following reports of a road traffic collision.

"We are currently assessing the situation and working with other members of the emergency services. Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible.

"Updates will be published on this page and Mersey Police as we know more."

Liverpool FC said: "We are in direct contact with Merseyside Police regarding the incident on Water Street which happened towards the end of the trophy parade earlier this evening.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident. We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident."

Prime Minister said: "The scenes in Liverpool are appalling — my thoughts are with all those injured or affected.

I want to thank the police and emergency services for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident.

I’m being kept updated on developments and ask that we give the police the space they need to investigate.

Liverpool Echo crime reporter Paddy Edrich reported from the scene that a restaurant was being used as a makeshift emergency room.

"I’m on Dale Street where it meets Water Street, where police are dealing with a serious incident in the wake of the Liverpool title parade," he posted on X.

"A number of people are receiving medical treatment inside restaurant Riva, which has been turned into a makeshift ER."

Liverpool's players and staff were on an open-top bus parade throughout the city to celebrate winning the title.

The Reds celebrated at Anfield on Sunday following a 1-1 draw with . Fans then took to the streets today for the parade which has been weeks in the planning following Liverpool wrapping up the title with several games to spare.
