Tesco has made a big change to the bakery aisle across its supermarket stores, and shoppers are not happy. The chain has pushed back the time it starts discounting fresh bakery items each day.
- alongside other major UK supermarket chains - reduces the price of its freshly baked each day in a bid to prevent food waste. The discounts allow shoppers to pick up a croissant, normally priced at £1.20, for just 60p.
Previously, Tesco would cut the prices from around 5pm. However, shoppers have noticed this time has been pushed back by around two hours until 7pm.
Tesco has confirmed the change, but did not confirm when it was introduced across its stores. It also noted that it does vary from store to store, but it generally offers discounts on pastry items from 7pm.
The supermarket chain sells a range of pastry items in-store, with some of its most popular ones being its pain au chocolat, cinnamon swirls, vanilla creme crowns, maple pecan plaits, and cinnamon turnovers.
Shoppers took to the Extreme Bargains UK group to share their frustrations with the change. In a post highlighting it, one person said: "Been around for ages now, used to be 5pm but they changed it to 7pm to fit in line with reductions on fridge and other bakery items."

In the comments, one person said that the pastries would now be sitting out for far too long, saying: "Yes, it's a good idea, but most of it is baked at 6am and sits out loose for 12 hours before it gets reduced."
While another added: "Very much doubt there’s any left at that time of day and as they’ve been sat there all day since 5am or 6am in the morning they will be dry." A third said: "They'll be stale by 7pm, so no point in taking them".
However, other shoppers supported the move, describing it as "good" with one person saying it was "useful to someone."
Tesco's yellow sticker deals - which applies discounts to food which are about to go out of date - has been around for several years and is an incredibly popular initiative. In March, the grocery giant began giving away some of these discounted products for free at selected Express conveience stores.
From 9:30pm, food marked with "CS" can be taken by shoppers, completely free of charge. At the time, Tesco said staff would get priority for “yellow sticker” items and food would continue to be donated to charities. However, any other reduced food that is still in stores ahead of closing time will then become available for shoppers to take for free.
