Donald Trump claims Iran and Israel have agreed to a ceasefire

Hours after Iran carried out retaliatory attacks on American bases in Qatar, US President Donald Trump announced on 23 June that Iran and Israel have agreed to a ceasefire, which he said would bring an end to the 12-day war between the two countries in the Middle East.

“CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE! It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE (in approximately 6 hours from now, when Israel and Iran have wound down and completed their in progress, final missions!), for 12 hours, at which point the War will be considered, ENDED!” Trump announced on Truth Social.

“Officially, Iran will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 12th Hour, Israel will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 24th Hour, an Official END to THE 12 DAY WAR will be saluted by the World. During each CEASEFIRE, the other side will remain PEACEFUL and RESPECTFUL,” he wrote. “On the assumption that everything works as it should, which it will, I would like to congratulate both Countries, Israel and Iran, on having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end, what should be called, “THE 12 DAY WAR.”,” he asserted.

LIVE Iran-Israel war: Iran fires six missiles at US’s Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar; explosions reported in Doha

“This is a War that could have gone on for years, and destroyed the entire Middle East, but it didn’t, and never will! God bless Israel, God bless Iran, God bless the Middle East, God bless the United States of America, and GOD BLESS THE WORLD!” Trump wrote on Truth Social, less than 50 hours after the US bombed Iran’s three nuclear sites.

In retaliation, Iran carried out strikes on 23 June at the US military bases in Qatar. According to The New York Times, Iran’s missile attack on Al Udeid Air Base, the largest American military installation in the Middle East, appeared calculated to avoid a US response. “Iranian officials said they had given advance notice that the missile strike was coming, minimizing potential casualties,” the daily reported.

Trump called it a weak strike. “Iran has officially responded to our Obliteration of their Nuclear Facilities with a very weak response, which we expected, and have very effectively countered. There have been 14 missiles fired — 13 were knocked down, and 1 was “set free,” because it was headed in a nonthreatening direction. I am pleased to report that NO Americans were harmed, and hardly any damage was done,” Trump said.

“Most importantly, they’ve gotten it all out of their “system,” and there will, hopefully, be no further HATE. I want to thank Iran for giving us early notice, which made it possible for no lives to be lost, and nobody to be injured. Perhaps Iran can now proceed to Peace and Harmony in the Region, and I will enthusiastically encourage Israel to do the same. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” said the President.

Trump also thanked Qatar for playing a role in bringing peace in the region.

“I’d like to thank the Highly Respected Emir of Qatar for all that he has done in seeking Peace for the Region. Regarding the attack today at the American Base in Qatar, I am pleased to report that, in addition to no Americans being killed or wounded, very importantly, there have also been no Qataris killed or wounded,” he said.

However, according to CNN Iran has not received any ceasefire proposal.

Meanwhile, Israel did not immediately acknowledge any ceasefire and heavy Israeli strikes continued in Tehran and other cities early on Tuesday.

“As of now, there is NO agreement' on any ceasefire or cessation of military operations,” Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi wrote in a post on the social platform X. “However, provided that the Israeli regime stops its illegal aggression against the Iranian people no later than 4 am Tehran time, we have no intention to continue our response afterwards.”

It's unclear what role Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's leader, played in the talks. He had said on social media that Iran would not surrender.

A ceasefire, if it culminates as Trump laid out, would be welcome news for the region and the world. But the situation in the Middle East remains far from stable and it was impossible to predict how longer-term dynamics might be affected. The Israeli and US bombing of Iran certainly has slowed Iran's ability to enrich nuclear material but it might also have steeled Tehran's resolve to breakout toward a bomb.
