In a major crackdown, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday raided a residence in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, and took into custody a 32-year-old man named Sunny in connection with a human trafficking case. He is accused of illegally sending people to the United States via the “donkey route”, a dangerous and illicit immigration path involving multiple countries.
What is the Case About?Sunny is alleged to have duped individuals in Punjab, promising them entry into the U.S. through illegal channels — commonly known as the donkey route or kabootarbazi, a term often used for unauthorized migration. The case was originally registered in a Punjab police station, prompting NIA's intervention for deeper investigation.
Pre-Dawn Raid by NIAA six-member NIA team from Chandigarh, led by Inspector Paramjeet, along with Dharamshala police, launched the surprise raid at 5 AM at Sunny’s bungalow in Naoroji Road, Ward No. 4. The search operation continued till 12 noon, after which Sunny was detained.
Key Evidence RecoveredThe NIA team recovered several important documents, believed to be linked to the human trafficking network. These documents have been seized for further investigation. Post-raid, the team secured all relevant materials and prepared to transfer the accused to Chandigarh for further interrogation and legal proceedings.
