BBC Breakfast was interrupted this morning for a breaking news alert in a devastating blow to the British public. Ofgem has announced the latest price cap on energy bills across England, Scotland and Wales, and presenter Jon Kay was on hand to deliver the blow to viewers at home.
He announced: "In the last few moments, the latest energy price cap for England, Scotland and Wales has been announced by the regulator Ofgem." His co-host Sally Nugent explained: "It affects how much millions of households will pay for gas and electricity this autumn and winter. We will have more on this in just a moment."
Across the bottom of the screen, a breaking news banner explained the price cap has risen by 2% in a blow to families across the UK, as cost of living correspondent Colletta Smith aired a report. But unhappy viewers were switching to rival channels and to the radio after one segment in particular irked them.
Many viewers demanded a refund on their licence fees as sports presenter John Watson took over the screen to attempt to break a Guinness World Record of how many ping pong balls he could hold in one hand.
The segment was officiated by a representative from Guinness with a clipboard, but sadly John failed to blow the last record out of the water as the balls kept falling from his hand as Sally cheered him on.
Irritated viewers took to social media to complain, with one moaning: "What the hell is going on?"
Someone else wondered: "Could BBC Breakfast get any lower? Guinness World Record!" And a third begged: "Can I get a refund on my licence fee?"
Another furious viewer said: "Think I might start listening to the news on the radio because this is just trash!"
