An eight-year-old boy has died after a horor e-bike collision on his way home from school. Zeke Hondow was reported to have been riding his own e-bike when it collided with a 15-year-old boy who was also riding one of the electrically-powered bicycles.
The incident happened near the Kawana Way and Sunshine Motorway interchange at Mountain Creek, in Queensland, Australia, on Thursday afternoon. According to Queensland Police, both Zeke and the other rider were wearing helmets. Zeke was rushed to the Sunshine University Hospital in a critical condition but sadly despite the best efforts from medical teams he died as a result of his injuries. Speaking at the time of the tragedy, a Queensland Police spokesperson said: "The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating after a boy died following a crash between two e-bikes this afternoon, October 30.
"Investigations indicate that around 3.36pm, a high school aged male rider and a primary school aged male rider crashed on the bike path near the Kawana Way and Sunshine Motorway interchange at Mountain Creek.
"The primary school aged boy was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a critical condition but has since succumbed to his injuries and was declared deceased. The high school aged boy refused medical treatment and is assisting police with their inquiries.
"The Forensic Crash Unit are investigating the circumstances of the incident and are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has relevant footage to come forward. Investigations are continuing."
Queensland's Transport Minister Brent Mickelberg told 7News governments need to do more to address issues around e-bikes. He said: "My thoughts are with the family and the friends... I've got an eight-year-old son myself. I can only imagine what they're going through right now,
"We've seen rapid evolution of this technology very quickly, but I think it's fair to say that governments at all levels need to do more to tackle this."
A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise funds for Zeke's family to ease the financial burden following his tragic death. It has so far raised just over £4,000.
