A British man has died in Gran Canaria after reportedly falling 30ft through a gap in the airport's car park. The 53-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene by an emergency responder. Police also confirmed they are investigating the incident, which occurred at around 7.30am on Wednesday. He was not a tourist, officers said, but they have not released any more information about him.
A National Police spokesperson said: "This morning, at 7:30am, a 53-year-old British man fell from a height at Gran Canaria Airport, specifically in the car park located near the domestic departures area. The incident occurred from a height of approximately three storeys, about 10 metres. It has been confirmed that the person was not a tourist. No further information is available at this time."
Police are understood to be looking into whether the man died as a result of an accident or a structural fault in the multi-storey car park.
There is also the possibility that he deliberately jumped to end his own life.
Investigators are combing through CCTV to piece together the events that led up to his death.
The airport was previously the scene of a shooting in May, when armed police killed a teenager reportedly threatening tourists with a knife.
Travellers were seen running for cover in horrifying videos as shots rang out.
The man was captured running at one of the five police officers trying to intercept him, who then fell on the ground amid the chaos.
He was shot dead as he tried to attack other officers who appeared to be warning him to desist before the opened fire.
Court officials confirmed one of the five bullets hit the teen in the neck, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
