Even though I have a short bob, I've always found blow-drying my hair a bit of a faff, and have been desperately seeking a way to achieve that just-stepped-out-of-the-salon look at home. One issue I have is that, while my hair is pretty straight and fine, there's a lot of it, so it can easily end up looking flat and limp.
The Revlon Salon One-Step Hair Dryer andVolumizer caught my eye a while ago because of the numerous great reviews I'd spotted (it has over 50,000 reviews on Amazon alone). So, I was and was eager to try it for myself - especially now it's half price at Argos in its early Black Friday sale. While the hair tool usually retails for £50, it is now available for £25.
It's essentially a large, oval-shaped brush with a powerful hair dryer built into it, allowing you to brush and style as you blow dry (much easier than balancing a hair dryer in one hand and a brush in the other). As you brush through your hair, hot air blows out from vents between the bristles. The barrel of the brush then helps you get closer to the roots for lift and volume, while the curved edges make it easy to tuck the ends under or smooth out the lengths.
One thing I particularly like is that it has two heat settings and a cool setting, allowing you to control the amount of heat you use on your hair. The tool also has a two-metre cable, which means you can plug it in and move around fairly easily, without feeling too limited.
The bristles are a mix of nylon and tufted pins, which grip the hair just enough to smooth and shape it without pulling. And because the dryer and brush are combined, you only need one hand, which gives you more control and less strain on your wrists and arms than a traditional hair dryer. There's also a ceramic coating on the barrel that helps distribute heat evenly and reduce frizz, leaving hair softer and shinier once you're done.
I recorded myself using it for the purposes of this review (please excuse my messy office; I'm currently on a Vinted selling spree) and was amazed at just how quickly it dried my hair. The final check was 10 minutes, from start to finish. I think that's the biggest game-changer for me, it's so quick and simple to use.
Instead of juggling a round brush in one hand and a heavy hairdryer in the other, I'm using just one tool, which means it's easier on my wrists and I have far more control. I can lift my roots properly for volume, smooth out the lengths, and tuck the ends under all in one go.
I like to towel dry my hair first, comb it out and apply heat spray and then section it off. Then, I use the brush to dry and style, leaving the front section until last. The brush is incredibly easy to use and grabs my hair effortlessly; there's no faffing about trying to wrap the strands around. I find the result is soft, smooth, and silky.
What I love most is how much volume it gives my roots, even though my hair type usually falls flat within an hour of styling. I normally wash and dry my hair in the evening, and it remains bouncy when I wake up.
I'm not the only one who loves it. In a review on Argos, one customer wrote: "Amazing product! So good even on my thin hair!" Another shopper on Amazon, where it costs £34.99, added: "A very good product. Prefer it to the traditional hairdryer, softer on the hair, curls nicely (I have long hair). Heat is good, it isn't too noisy, well-made, nice design."
I've seen reviews from other people who say they have hair types that range from curly and coily to fine and straight, and the majority of people seem to rave about it. I can see why; the bristles do glide through hair without snagging.
One negative I would say is that it can leave my hair a bit fluffy, with the baby strands at the crown sticking up. However, I tackle this by using Champo Flyaway Fix, £16, to smooth them down. Other people said they thought the barrel was too big for their hair, so if you do have a shorter style than min, it might not be suitable, though that depends how you plan to use it.
