A historic town in the picturesque canton of Schaffhausen in Switzerland is one of Europe's best-kept secrets. Located not far from the German border, this enchanting place is home to just 3,500 residents who are lucky to live in such a beautiful spot.
Stein am Rhein, which translates to 'stone on the Rhine' in English, refers to the town's prime location on the Rhine River where it meets Lake Constance. The township's history dates back to before 1000 AD, when it served as a significant trade hub due to its placement at the intersection of two major trade routes.
Stepping into its medieval Old Town is like walking back in time as the preservation of the area wouldn't look out of place in a Disney film. It was rightly awarded the first Wakker Prize by the Swiss Heritage Society back in 1972 who recognise municipalities in the country that develop and preserve their architectural heritage.
The judges of the Wakker Award acknowledged that Stein am Rhein was rare in Switzerland and uncommon in all of Europe for the number of notable buildings in a compact space. This fact means that photographers and Instagrammers are spoiled for choice when it comes to architectural delights and backgrounds.
Stein am Rhein is situated about halfway between the town of Schaffhausen and the city of Konstanz. The town's medieval centre retains its historic street layout with the site of the city wall and its gates still in good order. The medieval part of the town has been pedestrianised which provides locals and visitors with beautiful views of the many medieval buildings which are painted with frescoes. Here, the history isn't confined to museums but is showcased on the walls of a thriving community.
The Old Town is known for its timber-framed houses, combined with winding alleyways which will lead you to the market square. Here there are a myriad of shops on offer and it is also the perfect place to unwind with a coffee. On occasion, street performers can add an element of contemporary entertainment which bodes well with the ancient backdrop.
Visitors can watch the activity on the river at the town's promenade as boats float past. You can also use the river as a way to explore the region including Lake Constance or several settlements that hug the water.
The area around the town is also a big draw with the Rhine Falls being located closeby in a journey that takes around half-an-hour to get there. According to My Switzerland, the waterfall is billed as Europe's largest and puts on a stunning display of nature. You can also hike through Thurgau's Seerücken hill range which will provide the intrepid traveller with impressive views of Lake Constance and the Alps.
