Braemar, located in Aberdeenshire, west of the Scottish Highlands on the River Dee, is nestled in the Cairngorms National Park. Thousands of tourists descend on the beautiful Scottish town each year due to its stunning scenery, interesting royal history and variety of outdoor activities. You can hit the slopes at Glenshee Ski Centre, go fishing in the River Dee or play a round at the Braemar Golf Club.
Balmoral Castle, which is a residence of the royal family, is located nearby the quaint town, of which, Loch Muick offers a stunning backdrop. Braemar is surrounded by the fine Grampian Mountains and woodland scenery, among this you can find many walks to take around the town, often feeling as though you are the only person around to enjoy it.
There are also several restaurants and pubs for you to enjoy a pint and take in the peaceful surroundings.
Ballater is another town on the River Dee, located only 16 miles from Braemar. It is slightly bigger so offers more places to eat and drink alongside its yearly events that include: the Ballater Walking Festival each May, which attracts hillwalkers of all levels, and Victoria Week, held every August, which is a celebration of Ballater's connection with Queen Victoria and Balmoral Castle.
On Braemar, blogger Her Joli Journey said the Scottish town would "leave you speechless".
She added: "I audibly GASPED when I saw Braemar!!! This little slice of heaven, nestled near the Cairngorms National Park, is easily one of the prettiest villages in all of Scotland. Its claim to fame? Oh, just the world-famous annual Highland Games, no biggie. The Highland games take place every first Saturday of September, not to mention the best of the best when it comes to pipe bands, pipers, Highland dancers, and athletes. This is easily most unique places to visit in Scotland."
