Before deciding on which dog breed to get, you'll likely to lots of research to find one that will suit your life and situation the best. It can be quite overwhelming, as there are more than 200 recognised dog breed in the UK.
This means there will definitely be a perfect match for your home and lifestyle, so remember to do your own, independent research before committing to one specific breed. That being said, Amir Amwary, known online as Amir The Vet, has shared his "brutal opinion" on the five dog beeds he would "never own as a veteranarian".
The full time vet vet, who is based in South Africa, is on a mission to transform the way pet owners care for their animals, and often shares his advice and expert opinion on TikTok to his over 835k followers.
Siberian HuskyFirstly, the vet explained he would never own a Siberian Husky, because they have "so much energy" and they "need to be walked regularly".

If you don't, Amir warns they can become "destructive". In addition, he says they are "escape artists" and also "super hairy" which means they shed a lot. He also adds they are "so vocal and so noisy" - and likened it to a "big, stubborn toddler".
According to the PDSA charity, Siberian Huskies are "active, intelligent dogs who are always on the go". Although they can "fit really well in the right home", their "strength and stamina might not be for everyone". They share that Huskies need a minimum of two hours of exercise a day.
English Bull TerrierNext, he said he would never own a White Bull Terrier. Also known as English Bull Terriers, the PDSA shares they are "active, loving dogs known for their distinctive faces" and while they "make great pets" they are "known for eing challenging at times".
Amir acknowledges they can be "such a lovely breed", but they are "so strong-willed" and they have "such a strong prey drive". According to Amir, most of the time when he sees a dog fight, a Bull Terrier has been involved. He added that they are "prone to deafness" and can also suffer from "chronic skin issues".
As with any dog breed, the PDSA says "any training and socialising will need to start early and be consistant".
ChihuahuaThe third breed Amir would never own is a Chihuahua, which are known as a "yappy" breed. According to Amir, they are prone to "fear-based aggression" and are a "tiny dog with a huge dog's personality". They also struggle with separation anxiety, which means it can be hard for owners to leave them at all. "They also suffer with dental disease and potential tracheal collapse," he added, which makes it dfifficult for air to get to the lungs.
The PDSA shares Chihuahuas are a "popular breed due to their small size and loving, energetic and alert nature". While they are "little dogs" they have "big personalities", and need "lots to keep them occupied". However, they are "really adaptable" and would be "just as happy living in a flat as they would a countryside manor".
English BulldogAmir "really loves" the temperament of English Bulldogs, but because they are a brachycephalic breed, which means they are flat-faced, they can "suffer from a myriad of respiratory diseases". They are also "exercise and heat intollerant", and can suffer from skin issues. The PDSA shares: "Bulldogs are very likely to suffer from serious health and welfare issues due to their physical conformation, including severe breathing difficulties, skin problems, joint problems and dental issues.
"Due to the degree of potential suffering caused by breeding for exaggerated physical features rather than health and function, we strongly recommend owners consider a healthier breed, crossbreed or mongrel."
Belgian MalinoisLastly, Amir said he would never own a Belgian Malinois, also known as a Belgian Shepherd. According to the Kennel Club, they are "versitile herding and armed services dogs". They are "agile, fast and lightly built yet robust". Amir explained: "This is not a pet guys, it's a machine. They need constant physical and mental stimulation and they don't need an owner they need a leader. And if you don't give them that they will become destructive. They can make your life a liviing hell. [...] I would avoid this breed unless you are absolutely committed to it."
As previously stated, this is based on opinion. Please do independent research before committing to any particular dog breed.
