Chhattisgarh court orders FIR against filmmaker Anurag Kashyap over derogatory remark against Brahmins

RAIPUR: A Chhattisgarh court has directed the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against noted filmmaker Anurag Kashyap under Sections 196, 299, and 353 of the BNS over his alleged derogatory remark against Brahmins. These sections pertain to cognizable and non-bailable offences.

The complaint was lodged by High Court counsel Anjinesh Anjay Shukla, who argued the matter along with fellow counsels Nimish Kiran Sharma and Sandeep Thorani.

Shukla said that, on April 18, 2025, Kashyap allegedly made an objectionable and derogatory remark through his official Instagram handle (@anuragkashyap10), stating, "I will urinate on Brahmins. Any problem?"

Deeply offended by the remark, Shukla initially filed a complaint with the Station House Officer (SHO), Civil Lines, Raipur and the City Superintendent of Police (CSP). However, as no action was taken, Shukla sought the registration of a Complaint case against Kashyap in the Court of the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Raipur.

During the hearing, Shukla cited several relevant precedents from the Supreme Court and various High Courts to support his arguments. He contended that the said comment not only disrupts social harmony but also constitutes a punishable offence as it severely hurts the religious sentiments of a particular community.

Taking cognisance of the arguments and legal references presented, the court of Akanksha Bek, Judicial Magistrate First Class directed the Civil Lines Police to register an FIR against Kashyap under the applicable non-bailable provisions of the IPC.
