NEW DELHI: The district administration of Gurdaspur in Punjab on Thursday declared a complete blackout from 9pm until further orders amid rising tensions with Pakistan.
The decision came after reports of India's strict response to Pakistan over a barrage of missiles targetting border states.
As per news agency ANI, Pakistan's Air Defence Units of the HQ-9 air defence missile launchers in Lahore have suffered heavy damage.
The reports come even as tensions continue between India and Pakistan after India executed Operation Sindoor in which nine terror sites inside Pakistan were destroyed.
Pakistan's Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said 24 impacts were reported, with different weapons, in six localities during the strikes.
Earlier in the day, the Border Security Force (BSF) gunned down a Pakistani intruder along the International Border (IB) in Punjab’s Ferozepur sector. The unidentified individual was shot dead during the intervening night of May 7 and 8 while attempting to cross into Indian territory.
The incident comes in the wake of India’s pre-dawn airstrikes under Operation Sindoor, targeting nine terror infrastructure sites across mainland Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
The strikes, believed to have hit key launchpads, were carried out in retaliation for the recent terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives two weeks ago.
Among the targets were major strongholds of Pakistan-based terror groups Jaish-e-Mohammad in Bahawalpur and Lashkar-e-Taiba in Muridke, according to reports.
In response to the escalating situation, at least three Indian border states — Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat — have gone into high-alert mode.
Precautionary measures include cancellation of public events, temporary closure of educational institutions, and increased surveillance across sensitive areas.
Punjab, which shares a 532km-long border with Pakistan, was among the first to implement heightened security protocols. State cabinet minister Aman Arora confirmed that all border districts have been placed on alert, and all public gatherings, including official events, have been suspended as a preventive measure.
Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann also cancelled his scheduled anti-drug campaigns in SBS Nagar and Jalandhar. The Punjab Police have been put on alert as the “second line of defence,” with officials confirming ongoing coordination with the Indian Army to ensure readiness for any emergency.
