'Surround yourself with people you admire': Warren Buffett's golden advice to young investors

Warren Buffett offered timeless advice to young investors at Berkshire Hathaway’s Annual General Meeting in Omaha on May 3, urging them to be intentional about the people they surround themselves with and to pursue work they genuinely enjoy.

“Who you associate with is just enormously important,” Buffett said. “You are going to have your life progress in the general direction of the people that you work with, that you admire, that become your friends.”

He stressed that the right company not only shapes professional success but also personal fulfilment. “You’ll not only learn how to be successful in business, you’ll learn how to be successful in life,” he added.

Buffett also advised young people to find careers they are passionate about—jobs they would do even without pay. “What you're really looking for in life is something where you've got a job that you'd hold, but you didn't need the money,” he said. “I've had that for a very, very long time.”

Warning against compromising integrity for success, he said, “You don't want to associate with people or enterprises that ask you to do something that you shouldn't be doing.”

Reflecting on his early years, Buffett recalled meeting a key mentor by chance: “In 10 minutes, I found that I had a man who was going to be just wonderfully helpful to me.” He emphasized that goodwill and shared values often lead to lasting, rewarding relationships: “You get a compounding of good intentions and good behaviour.”

Summing up his philosophy, Buffett said happiness contributes to a longer, more fulfilling life. “A happy person lives longer than somebody that’s doing things they don’t really admire that much in life,” he noted. “And for some reason, I apparently live longer too.”
