However, his contract with the Capitals is only valid for another season, and fans are curious to know when the star is planning to retire. We are taking a look at what Ovechkin has to say about the same.
Alex Ovechkin keen on making a comeback amidst rumours of retirement
Alex Ovechkin is currently the fourth-oldest player in the NHL. When asked about how much longer he is planning to be an athlete, he joked, "First of all, [I have] to make a roster at 40 years old," two days after their team was eliminated in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. With his contract with the Capitals expiring in 2026, fans are curious whether he will sign another contract going ahead.
While speaking of his plans for the future, Ovechkin said, "I'm going to use those couple months [in the offseason] to rest, enjoy my life, then back to work." After that, he shared, "Me and [trainer Pavel Burlachenko are] going do our job to get ready for the season and just do my best."
In a previous interview, he had bluntly shared that he has no plans of retiring anytime soon. He shared, "I'm not retiring so." He further continued, "As long as I can, I will try to stick around." Many suggest that his eagerness to stay on could attribute to the long-standing rivalry between Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby.
However, he has thought of what he would like to do after retirement. In an interview with Capitals Outsider, Ovechkin once shared that he plans to move to Russia, closer to his family. He said, “We will relax and enjoy life. Then we’ll have to look for my own business that will bring pleasure to me and those around me. I want to visit several countries: Japan, Africa, China.”
