NEW DELHI: The Indian women's hockey team displayed a determined effort but suffered a 2-3 defeat against Australia in their bilateral series' penultimate match at Perth Hockey Stadium on Saturday.

The Indian goals came from Navneet Kaur (35th minute) and Lalremsiami (59th), whilst Australia's scorers were Grace Stewart (2nd), Jade Smith (36th), and Greta Hayes (42nd).

Following earlier losses of 3-5 and 2-3 to Australia 'A' team and a 0-2 defeat to Australia's senior side on May 1, India will face the Australian senior team in the series finale on Sunday.

Australia gained an early advantage, scoring in the second minute through Grace. Despite India's efforts to equalise during the remaining first quarter, they couldn't break through.

The second quarter saw India successfully defend against two Australian penalty corners, maintaining the one-goal difference at half-time.

India equalised in the third quarter when Navneet successfully converted a penalty corner in the 35th minute.

The parity was short-lived as Jade scored a field goal for Australia in the 36th minute. Australia then secured two more penalty corners before Hayes increased their lead to 3-1 in the 42nd minute.

In the closing quarter, Lalremsiami reduced Australia's lead with a late goal. However, the hosts maintained their defence to claim the victory.
