Microsoft is making significant changes to how users manage passwords across its platforms. Recent issues include passwords disappearing from Windows accounts, expired passwords working to unlock systems, and attackers targeting Microsoft accounts with password-spraying attacks . Now, the company has announced a major shift for its Microsoft Authenticator app.

“Autofill in Microsoft Authenticator has been a way to securely store and autofill passwords on apps and websites you visit on your phone,” Microsoft said in a post.

“Microsoft is streamlining autofill so you can use saved passwords easily across devices. As part of these updates, autofill in Microsoft Authenticator will be discontinued from July 2025,” the company added.

Three changes coming to Microsoft Authenticator starting June
Microsoft has confirmed that starting June 1, the Authenticator app will no longer allow users to save new passwords. This marks a change from its gradual positioning as a default password manager, capable of saving and autofilling passwords on both Android and iOS.

The changes will continue into July, when Microsoft will phase out the autofill feature within the Authenticator app. By August, Microsoft has stated that saved passwords will not be accessible in Authenticator.

Starting June 2025, you will no longer be able to save new passwords in Authenticator.
During July 2025, you will not be able to use autofill with Authenticator.
From August 2025, your saved passwords will no longer be accessible in Authenticator.

Microsoft on saved data and passkey support
Microsoft clarifies that saved data, including passwords and addresses will be to Microsoft account for autofill in Microsoft Edge browser. Users can save generated passwords from history to keep them and payment info in Authenticator will be deleted after July 2025.

All saved passwords in Authenticator will be inaccessible after August 2025, unsaved generated passwords will be deleted.

Moreover, the Authenticator app will continue to support passkeys. Microsoft is advising users who have set up passkeys for their Microsoft Account to ensure the Authenticator app remains enabled as their Passkey Provider, as disabling the app will also disable their passkeys.
