JAMMU: A Thar SUV driver hit an elderly scooter driver in Jammu, reversed and rammed the victim again in an apparent deliberate act captured on CCTVs, landing the victim in ICU and triggering a manhunt for the culprit amid outrage and viral videos.
The horror unfolded Sunday in Jammu’s tony Gandhinagar suburb around 1:30pm on Sunday. The victim was identified as Kamal Dutta (68), a local resident. He remains in the ICU of Govt Medical College (GMC), Jammu, with doctors describing his condition as stable.
Based on CCTV footage, police tracked down the SUV and detained its owner, Rajendra Anand, also a resident of Gandhinagar. “Rajendra’s son Manan, who crushed the scooter rider, is absconding,” Jammu (South) SP Sharma said.
Manan has been booked on attempted murder charges and the SUV seized. The scooter was coming from the opposite direction and was hit by the SUV, leaving Dutta grievously wounded. “The man (Dutta) was shifted to GMC by passers-by while the driver fled the spot,” a police spokesperson said.
A regular accident case was registered initially but it was only after the cops started scanning the CCTV images that the deliberate nature of the crash came to the fore. “The SHO of Gandhi Nagar and his team scoured CCTV footage and recorded the statement of an eyewitness. This led to revelations about the more serious aspect of the case,” the police spokesman said.
Jammu police have urged the public to come forward if they have more information about the incident, reiterating their commitment to deliver justice. “The investigation is being carried out under the close supervision of SDPO South and SP South, ensuring that all legal, procedural, and forensic angles are thoroughly pursued,” the spokesman said.
