Congress leader Rahul Gandhi gifted a new motorcycle to a man from Bihar’s Darbhanga district after he lost his two-wheeler during the ‘ Voter Adhikar Yatra .’
The Congress, in a post on X, shared a video of Shubham Saurabh recounting his story and showing the motorcycle keys handed to him by the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha .
"When Rahul Gandhi took out a bike rally in Darbhanga, I had lent my motorcycle to security personnel accompanying him. I was distraught to learn later that my bike was misplaced," Saurabh said.
"I am happy to get a brand new motorcycle, the same model as the one I lost. I am touched by the gesture coming from such a senior leader,” he added.
Saurabh alleged that his motorcycle went missing after being taken by security personnel for a bike rally held during Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ in Darbhanga last week. Saurabh, who runs a hotel in the district, said the incident caused him inconvenience and raised fears that the vehicle may have been stolen.
According to him, seven motorcycles parked on his premises were taken by security personnel on August 27 for a 2-km rally from Shahpur Chowk to Shobhan Chowk. “I was attending visitors at the hotel when six security personnel came, asking for tea. In the meanwhile, they found the rally passing and requested me to hand over the keys of seven bikes parked on the campus, asking me to sit in the four-wheeler they had come with,” he said.
He said six of the motorcycles were later found abandoned at different locations in the town, but his own vehicle remains missing. “We faced a lot of trouble in collecting the bikes, but my bike has not been returned yet. I fear it was stolen by someone,” he said.
Saurabh added that when he contacted one of the security personnel, he was directed to Sitamarhi, Dhaka, and Motihari for information, but was unable to trace the motorcycle.
He said he received a call from an unknown person informing him that Rahul Gandhi wished to gift him a new motorcycle in Patna on September 1.
Saurabh informed his father of the call, and though both were initially doubtful, they travelled to the state capital on the final day of Gandhi’s ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’.
At the Income Tax Roundabout, where Rahul paused en route to Gandhi Maidan, he briefly stopped to hand over the motorcycle keys to Saurabh.
The ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ launched on August 17 from Sasaram, covered 110 assembly constituencies across 25 districts, and is set to conclude in Patna on September 1. Bihar Assembly elections are due later this year, though the Election Commission has yet to announce the schedule.
